VarTroY - _Came to Stay_
by: Quentin Kalis (3 out of 5)
Far too many bands, especially in the initial stage of their career, wear their influences brazenly on their collective sleeves, and VarTroY in particular have obviously been spending too much time amongst their classic Iron Maiden collection. Although other heavy metal influences are noticeable, Iron Maiden has by far had the most impact on this quintet. Nor has their classic heavy metal sound been imbued with a contemporary vision, resulting in a demo that sounds incredibly dated. Musically speaking, the band is competent enough and are more than capable of writing a few catchy choruses -- the fist pumping chorus of "VarTroY" is still deeply embedded within my cranium. As with many bands that feature in this section, VarTroY are clearly performing music that they love, but something more than a heartfelt appreciation for a particular genre is needed to sustain repeated listens.
